The last week of Jesus’ life pulses with drama. With the raising of Lazarus the fame of Jesus pervaded the little nation of Israel. After a few months, when Jesus arrived at Bethany, all the elements of this drama came together—the Passover, Jesus, the multitudes, the priests and Pharisees. Jesus’ popularity reached a crescendo as the multitudes that gathered in and around Jerusalem for the Passover season rushed out to Bethany to see Jesus and Lazarus together. A conspiracy to take Jesus’ life filled the air. Also, the priests hatched a plot to kill Lazarus.
